Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1890s.
This elegant example has a fluted domed lid with a central oval vacant cartouche which when opened reveals a removable pierced tray which is where blocks of butter would sit, the underneath would be filled with crushed ice to keep the butter fresh and chilled.

The dish stands on exquisite legs and is fully marked on the underside "Garrard & Co. Ltd. / Regent Plate". Dating to the late Victorian era, around 1890, this piece remains in excellent condition. Overall spanning 7 3/4" wide the oval measures 6 1/2" x 4 3/4"; standing 5" tall.
