Description

Gillows of Lancaster: a truly superb quality late 19th century DAVENPORT (writing desk) in particularly fine original condition by this most famous of English cabinetmakers.

Constructed of finest burr yew-wood, the many features of this stunning davenport include: * a gorgeous gilded and hand-chased gallery * gilt-tooled leather writing surface * fitted interior all of burr yew with two small drawers * large slide to the left side * hinged pen-and-ink drawer * three drawers to one side (dummy drawers opposite) * carved and inlaid front columns flanking the kneehole * carved "melon" feet with original concealed castors.

Of particular note is the beautifully-figured burr yew that has been chosen for this piece, and the superb inlay to each drawer; dummy drawer and around the top, back and front panels.

Original locks, hinges and handles throughout. Stamped: "GILLOW & CO" to the top drawer.
