Large and Magnificent Gothic Clock Set - Japy Freres

Description

Large and Magnificent Gothic Clock Set - Japy Freres

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition ~~

A truly stunning gilt brass clock set by Japy Freres standing well over 2 feet in height. The design is bold and heavy gothic, decorated with mythical sea creatures to the top, goddesses and winged griffins. Particularly charming are the mythical dogs dangling from the candelabra by belts round their tummies, stationed to ward off evil spirits. The overall look of the set is of a stout castle, this is a very heavy and well modelled clock set with much of the original gilding being bright and clean.

The dial is designed in the manner of 18th century examples. Each dial letter is an individual cartouche, enamelled on copper and pinned to a heavy cast back plate. The bezel is heavy hobnailed and is fitted with convex glass.

The clock has a fretted back to allow the pendulum to be seen and the candelabra are modelled in the round - the clock set would look great from both sides for example in the middle of a room as well as against a wall.

The French Japy Freres movement is of excellent quality and runs for 8 days and strikes on a bell. It is in excellent, clean and running condition - it is complete with a replacement pendulum and bell Click the movie below to hear the clock running!

Condition of the clock and candelabra is excellent, there are no losses. Gilding is worn in places and is bright and clean. Candelabra arms are slightly distorted and there are two old repairs and some stress cracks in the brass but they are strong and sound. The stem of the candelabra are slightly off vertical as is common with large sets. The dial is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. The blued steel hands are original.

A magnificent clock set of the highest quality, by a renown maker, ready for you to display.
