Antique Shapland & Petter Single Mahogany Wardrobe Compactum C1890

Antique Mahogany Wardrobe Compactum by Shapland & Petter of Barnstaple Devon, and with original s & P stamps to the locks. A superb quality mahogany wardrobe dating from around 1890 and with a cornice top with dental moulding above a deep frieze and to one side is a full length bevelled edge mirror set within a mahogany surround with pediment to the top and with original brass handle and to the base is a small panelled shoe cupboard ( most unusual feature. To the other side is a stunning pair of doors with interlocking panels above a panel of half turned spindles and with internal shelf. Below this is an open space with carved spindle supports joined by a shaped frieze and above three long graduating drawers all of which are mahogany lined with original brass handles. It stands on a plinth base and separates for ease of transporting.

The wardrobe has its original lining to both the hanging area and cupboard.

Measures: 72" high x 22" deep x internal depth 19" x 64" wide

Shapland and Petter are synonymous with The Arts & Crafts Movement and designed for Libertys & Co among others and they were renowned for excellent design and workmanship. The carvers were highly skilled, serving seven year apprenticeships and attending classes at the Barnstaple School of Art. Ornately carved furniture required up to a hundred tools.
