Christian Davies Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1910s.
The central section of breakfront outline has four glazed doors with seaweed marquetry inlaid banding, opening to reveal adjustable solid oak shelves and with traditional William & Mary style cross grain walnut glazing bars. The lower section again of breakfront outline with two rectangular oak lined drawers and patinated brass split pin tear drop handles, flanked by twin rectangular doors with seaweed marquetry detail throughout. The drawers and cupboards veneered in beautifully figured walnut. The whole supported on eight barley twist walnut legs united by a wonderful shaped under tier with turned bun feet, stamped Gill & Reigate of London and also having the retailers label S & H Jewell Of Holborn, London. This bookcase is made exactly as a period one would have been, all the walnut is veneered onto oak, even the sides and back are solid oak throughout. A stunning example of their work.
