An Unusually Small Victorian Mahogany Chiffonier Sideboard Shelved Back Circa1880.

Description

This super little chiffonier can be dated almost exactly to 1880. The reason for this is the 'obelisk' feature on the lower sides below the carved scrolls.

Cleopatra's needle was finally brought into britain after a desperate and tragic journey in 1878. It's arrival and erection on the embankment triggered a fascination with obelisks that was so typical of the victorian era. The pointed obelisk shape was incorporated into furniture design, pottery and even architecture. The obelisks are very obvious on each side of this small and practical piece of mahogany furniture.

The item is complete with the shelved top and carved applications, it has finely figured honduras mahogany veneers and a long drawer with serpentine front. Below the cupboard has a single shelf. The original lock and key are present and functional.

Size is important! This chiffonier is only 35 inches in width making it highly versatile unlike other massive victorian pieces! The overall height is 57inches and the front to back measurement is 16.25 inches. This piece of furniture will fit almost anywhere.
