Antique English Mother of Pearl Macassar Ebony Inlaid Tea Caddy C.1830

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A fabulous large and highly decorative tea caddy in exotic Macassar Ebony with it's dramatic striped appearance, somewhat similar to Zebrawood.

Each end has a carved ring handle upon a turned backplate and the box stands on it's four exquisitely carved original feet.

The front and top has the most striking and intricate Mother of Pearl or Nacre shell inlay, all complete and original and incorporates two Palm Tree motives at the front.

The interior reveals two removable tea liners each with a hinged lid, one with a repair to the side. A couple of other minor blemishes to report is the veneer shrinkage cracks to the interior of the lid and one grain crack to the lid of one of the cannisters, none of great consequence but reported and shown for accuracy.

Between the two cannisters is the original fine cut crystal mixing bowl, which would have been used to mix the black and green teas to taste and then placed into a teapot.

A really showy piece, complete with a working key and in fabulous condition dating to the William IV era, around 1830. 13" x 7" x 7 1/2" tall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
