This is an attractive mid Victorian walnut and ebonised collectors chest in the Aesthetic style. It has a canted rectangular top above a false drawer with nine opening drawers below. The drawers are all finished with ebonised ogee moulding and ring turned handles and there is an internal locking mechanism which secures the lower drawers when the top drawer is closed. The internal sizes of the drawers are 37.5cm wide x 25cm deep x 6.5cm high (14 3/4in x 9 3/4in x 2 1/2in) and the bases are all wire mesh, presumably for good air circulation. It does look like the meshes could be removed fairly easily and a solid base added if required. The condition of this chest is very good, There are no keys for the lock (but pushing the drawer in still causes the drawers beneath to ‘lock’).
