Antique Salt Bag, Afshar Tribes of Kerman Province, Southern Persia.

Description

What a fabulous salt bag! Intricately woven with vegetable-dye wool in soumack technique, this stunning bag is in immaculate condition for its age. Woven by Afshar tribes in the Bardsir area of southern Persia around the end of the 19th century, the highly experienced weaver had a superb feeling for design as you can see in the way that the lozenges in the central field appear to float over the compartmentalised pattern. Note also, the one remaining or possibly only one, cowrie shell symbolising 'good luck'! Let's not forget the back of the bag! Woven in madder-red plainweave technique, it features 9 stylised creatures. The sides of the bag are finely braided with goat-hair. A truly fantastic and collectable bag of the type very rarely found these days.
