Beautifully Fitted Games Box by Betjemann

19th century
Description

A superior quality mid/late 19th century figured walnut GAMES BOX by Betjemann & Sons. The well figured domed box is mounted with gilt Gothic style 'straps' inset with Tiger;s Eye semi-precious stones.

The lid, lined in blue 'watered' silk, opens to reveal twin ivory inlaid ebony "Cribbage" boards, whilst the divided red leather compartments below contain playing cards; leather Bezique scoreboards; counters; full set of eight ivory pegs and pair of carved ivory "hand" scorers.

In superb condition, the hinges are gilded and the gilded placque at the rear is engraved with the retailer: W. Thorn, Pall Mall, LONDON.
