Description

A large scale oil on canvas painting by W.P. Hollyer depicting highland cattle watering by a stream within a Scottish highland mountainous backdrop. Signed and dated W.P Hollyer 1879. Housed in the original giltwood and gesso frame.

Dimensions:Frame 56" high x 77" wide Canvas 36" high x 59" wide

Condition: This painting is in excellent condition. The frame has had minor restoration over time and possibly been re-gilded around the edges. The painting has at some time been cleaned and the canvas re-lined.

William Perring Hollyer was born in Dover in 1834, the first son who survived beyond early childhood of Joseph Hollyer and Amelia Perring Mannings. Joseph was a Herald Painter by trade (painting coats of arms on the carriages of the gentry), so this is perhaps where William got his artistic skills from. Many of Joseph's other sons became Artists on Glass.

William specialised in animal paintings, especially Scottish scenes which were very popular in the mid 19th century, such as Highland cattle, Stags etc. Despite his love of Scottish scenes, there is no evidence that he actually went there.

In 1851 he moved with his parents from Dover to London. He married in 1864 to Grace Emily Rooke and had 10 children, many of whom became artists, notably Eva, Maud, Gregory, William and Olive. Gregory and William emigrated to the USA. He moved from London in 1875 and settled in the Liverpool and Birkenhead area, though returned to London after 1891. During 1881 he stayed at Bettws-y-Coed in North Wales: this may just have been a holiday, but one of his daughters was born there. In 1901, the family was living at Little Paxton, Huntingdonshire. He died in 1922 in Farringdon, Berks
