Antique Vanity Bag, Baluch Tribes of Western Afghanistan

1900 - 1920
Description

This charming Vanity Bag or 'Chanteh' in Persian, was woven by either Baluch or Taimani tribes in western Afghanistan circa 1900. The front of the bag is woven in intricate weft-float brocade and decorated in tassels - symbolically there for 'good luck' purposes. Most of the colour is undyed sheep's wool with a scattering of vegetable blue, turquoise and red. The handle at the opening is braided goat-hair.

Size: 34cm square (13.5" square).
