Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The style is typical of the period made from exotic (and very expensive) Rosewood. The inlaid pewter stringing and Mother of Pearl Roundels are also typical of this era.

The box opens to reveal a large compartment for keepsakes and larger pieces of jewellery, these are always popular for keeping boxed jewelry items or watches, this has been re-lined in most attractive hand-marbelled paper creating a clean, fresh interior. The interior of the lid retains it's most marvellous original velvet panel with a frame in gold tooled leather. This opens to reveal a "secret" wallet or portfolio where letters would have been kept.

This one has a lovely lower drawer fitted for jewelry, there are two keys, one for the box and one for the drawer.
A magnificent and highly decorative box in excellent condition, measuring 13" x 9" x 7".
