Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The folding gallery has intricate micro-mosaic Tunbridge inlay in the form of floral and foliate scrolls either side of a floral bouquet.

The underside is lucky enough to have retained it's original label signed by Edmund Nye "Manufacturer, Mount Ephraim and Parade, Tunbridge Wells".
Edmund Nye was a renowned Tunbridge Ware maker, who worked in Tunbridge Wells from 1809 until his death in 1863. Initially he was in partnership with William Fenner until 1817 and then continued in his own right, employing Thomas Barton as his foreman and designer in 1836.

Edmund Nye had a reputation for good quality work and he enjoyed royal patronage from 1836. He exhibited at The Great Exhibition in 1851and amongst his designs were fine examples of tropical butterflies.

An opportunity to acquire a rare piece in excellent condition. 18" x 11" with the opening for books measuring 15 3/4", each side panel stands 8" tall when open.
