Wonderful Antique English Three Drawer Brass Telescope C.1870

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

An unusual Victorian telescope made from wonderful solid English brass, the piece has a wonderful antique patina and we have left it as it should be, untouched.

It's unusual due to the covering of the barrel with a black woven fibre and a string natural woven cord top and bottom with a tab integrated into each.

The lens has a brass cover and the eye piece has a little integrated shutter to protect the eye hole.

This example is lucky enough to have been signed J.H. Steward / 406-66-456 Strand, 54 Cornhill, London.

James Henry Steward was primarily an optician and founded his business in 1852. The company produced a large range of items for military use and advertised in their catalogues that they produced instruments for Reconnoitring, Sketching, Night Marching, Signally, Gun Laying'. They were well thought of with their work to such a standard that they were opticians to The British & Foreign Governments, the National Rifle Associations of England, India, Canada & the Colonies and the National Artillery Association.

James Henry Steward of London. This clockmaker, watchmaker and jeweller (i.e. retail jewellers shop) was working in London from about 1856 to about 1892.

Britten lists this name twice, but I am assuming it is the same person. From about 1856 to about 1871, he had a shop 406 Strand, London where he is listed as a watchmaker, jeweller and optician in a directory for 1861. In a directory dated 1882 he is sill listed at 406, 456 and 66 Strand, WC and 54 Cornhill. From about 1867 to about 1875 he is also reported to have traded at at Gracechurch Street and 63 St Paul's Churchyard, London.

The telescope came to me in a tatty leather case (slightly large, so perhaps not the original), which I have included.

Excellent condition, measuring 6" in length extending to 16 1/2" in length.
