Antique English Silver Plate & Glass Caviar Serving Dish C.1880 by Thomas Prime

Description

A most unusual Victorian Caviar dish, made from silver plate inset with a hefty thick opaline glass liner with a slightly concave top to pile the Caviar in the centre. This thick glass slab would be iced before serving.

The base stands on four handsome original feet supporting the attractive pierced or reticulated holder that contains the glass. The domed lid is decoratively fluted and crowned with a fabulous figural finial in the form of a Moth or Butterfly.

The lid is marked by the silversmith, Thomas Prime & Son.

Superb undamaged condition, (a minor imperfection in the glass shown, insignificant but shown for accuracy) measuring 9" handle to handle with a rim diameter measuring 6" and standing 5" tall to top of finial.
