London Fine Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
It will also work as a stand alone piece - perhaps by an entrance door whereby the bowl top would serve as a receptacle for keys or similar.

A wonderful base, featuring mythical serpent heads at each foot, sweeps into the spectacular centre column which details a cobra headed serpent devouring a large bird. The piece then rises through further wonderful carving before bursting into a flower-head upper with foliate and fruit embellishment.

The whole displays desirable ebonized finish.
The piece is in very good antique order throughout and stands robustly.
Overall a very pleasing example, both attractively styled and well presented. A quirky and interesting addition to any setting and very rare in this style, quality and original condition.
