The large threaded globe has a silverplated insert to house the matches. The (non-safety) matches or vestas would be struck on the textured threaded glass.
A most unusual example in excellent condition, dating to the Edwardian era, around 1900/1910. The base has a diameter measuring 6 1/2", the sphere having a diameter of approximately 3" and standing around 3 1/4" tall.
