Large Antique Silverplated Threaded Glass Match Strike or Vesta by Mappin & Webb

Description

A very handsome large matchstrike or vesta made by the top-notch silversmith, Mappin & Webb with a full mark to the base. This one is beautiful quality and made from silverplate.

The circular base has a decorative reeded rim with a tiny foliate motif integrated around the circumference.

The large threaded globe has a silverplated insert to house the matches. The (non-safety) matches or vestas would be struck on the textured threaded glass.

A most unusual example in excellent condition, dating to the Edwardian era, around 1900/1910. The base has a diameter measuring 6 1/2", the sphere having a diameter of approximately 3" and standing around 3 1/4" tall.
