Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.

The hinged lid to the box is beautifully inlaid with foliate brass and two engraved plates, one for "Answered" letters and the other for "Unanswered".
The top retains it's original polished brass escutcheon with the lock signed by the top-notch Bramah of 124 Piccadilly (London). The box comes with it's original Bramah key, requiring a push and turn as these locks are sprung.

The interior retains it's central divider for separating the letters deposited. A superb box in excellent condition. 7 1/2" x 6" x 5" tall.
