Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1890s.

This Victorian letter box would have once graced a grand home, private club or hotel, where mail and books would have been placed for the staff to take off to the Post Office. This one is most unusual with the drawer below for "Book Post", a popular gift amongst the gentry during this era and were often posted to one another.

The front has an inset Barometer to the front telling household members what to expect with the weather outside. The top has a glazed window surrounded by brass accommodating a card listing collection times and postal rates.

The lid at the back opens allowing the box to be emptied, and comes complete with a working tasselled key.
The inside of the Book Post drawer is where the original maker's plate can be found in gilded brass, engraved W. Thornhill & Co. 144 New Bond St., in London's most exclusive shopping street and retailing top-notch luxury goods.
A most unusual and exciting piece, in superb condition.
