Unusual Antique Oak & Silver Plated Biscuit Box by Thomas Hardwood & Sons C.1880

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A really wonderful biscuit box made from solid English Oak panels which have very skillfully been manipulated to create a cylindrical casket.

The fittings are all made from silver plate with a full mark for TH & S for the Birmingham silversmith, Thomas Hardwood & Sons, this particular mark being used between 1864 and 1896.

The lid is top quality with a flush hinge and a turned natural finial. The lid is beautifully engraved with what almost looks like a sun design. There are two ring handles to the side and the feet have a real Celtic knot look about them.

These feet may have been custom made for the family that originally owned this box, there is a family crest engraved to the front of a tree trunk with sprouting branches, underneath the family motto "Repullulat" is engraved. I believe this to be the motto of a Scottish family, Lauder or Laurie. The motto means "It buds afresh".

The interior retains it's original creamy porcelain fitted liner still in undamaged condition.

A handsome and somewhat historical piece in excellent condition (minor wear to the plate around the crest). The lid diameter measures 5 3/4" and the box stands 8" to top of finial.
