A quite wonderful example of an English Papier Mache Jewelry box dating to around 1860 and in remarkable condition.

It's a very unusual example with exotic scenes of far away destinations at the time when travel to distant shores became a possibility and de rigueur for the very weatlty and elite in English society.

One would have expected to find a signature of Jennens and Bettridge on the bottom but it was common for their pieces to be unsigned, this one doesn't bear a signature. There are typical signs of his work such as the Birds of Paradise, the Mother of Pearl inlay to the front and the gilding, remaining in superb condition.

The interior is just as exciting, all totally original in silk and velvet, with the original removable tray. Complete with a working tasselled key, the box remains in superb condition. 9" x 6 1/4" x 2 3/4".
