Antique Anglo-portuguese Brass Mounted Teak & Macassar Ebony Chest C.1850

Description

A really very unusual box or chest dating to the mid-nineteenth century and we think probably Anglo-Portuguese.

This unusually shaped box stands on six chunky turned Teak feet. The Teak box is trimmed in exotic Macassar Ebony, it is hard to see in the photographs but this dark wood has streaks of orange in, similar to Coromandel.

The box has a plethora of brass mounts, with four heavy cast brass swing handles, two each side. There is a beautiful original key which is just turned to open the sprung lock.

The interior has been professionally re-lined in a hand-marbelled paper, creating a clean and fresh interior ready for use.

A really exotic and showy box, the like of which it is unlikely to come across again. Excellent condition, measuring an impressive 16 1/2" x 10" x 9" tall.
