P A Oxley Antique Clocks & Barometers has dated this piece to the 1750s.
The arched brass dial also with separate silvered brass chapter ring, matted centre, subsidiary sunken seconds, date aperture, blued steel hands and brass spandrels to the corners and arch.
The substantial case with a long trunk door veneered with the finest flame mahogany and with brass inlaid reeded quarter pillars capped with brass capitals. The raised panelled base also veneered with flame mahogany and standing on a double plinth. The hood with brass inlaid reeded pillars terminating with brass Doric capitals and with inspection windows to the side. The broken arch top with blind sound fret and with access to the dial via a glazed and lockable door.
Note: There are two makers by the name of William Skeggs listed. This may have possibly been a Father and son. They were both working in the latter half of the 18th century. The cabinet of this particular clock is of a very high quality. Only the very best flame veneer has been selected.
