Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Empire style mirrors originated in the early nineteenth century, drawing structural inspiration from Roman, Greek, and Egyptian classical architecture. They typically feature heavy rectangular mahogany frames, bold column pilasters, and carved gilded ornamentation such as eagles, wreaths, and classical busts.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using solid native or imported dark woods such as mahogany, decorated with water-gilded lime wood or composition carvings. The reflective plates were traditionally made from mercury-gilded flat glass or early silvered glass panes.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-cut timber backboards, square-headed iron nails, and natural oxidisation or foxing across the glass plate. Wear on the gilding often reveals the underlying reddish bole clay layer beneath the gold leaf.

Position the mirror centrally above a hallway console table or living room mantelpiece to serve as an architectural focal point. Combining dark timber and gilded detail with neutral wall tones balances traditional features with contemporary decor.

Dust mahogany frames lightly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to polished timber surface areas. Gilded carvings must never be cleaned with water or liquid solvents, as moisture dissolves the traditional water-gilding glue layer.
