P A Oxley Antique Clocks & Barometers has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The thermometer calibrated from 20º to 110º Fahrenheit. The shaped dial signed by the maker J. Somalvico, No 87, Holborn, London. The mahogany herringboned veneered case with exposed mercury tube and boxwood and ebony chequered stringing throughout. The base with a double turned cistern cover and a brass transportation screw. The broken architectural pediment with a central brass finial.
Note: The Somalvico family worked from the early 18th century until the end of the 19th century. They were mostly based in Holborn, London. We believe this instrument was made by Joseph Somalvico who had two sons, James and Charles. Both followed their Father into the world of instrument making and worked with him into the 19th century.
