Unusual Antique English Burl Walnut Letters Box C.1870

Description

A really fabulous Victorian Letters box which would have sat in a grand old house, private club or hotel; letters would be put in the box and taken to the Post Office by a staff member.

Made from rich Burr Walnut, the grain in quite beautiful and a good nutty colour. The top is inset with the word "Letters" and the the other with the collection times. The hinged lid opens to empty the box, complete with working key.

What makes this particularly unusual is the three glazed sides, the front panel is "double glazed" with the hand painted "Letters" sandwiched in the middle.

A fabulous piece in superb condition, measuring 12" x 6 1/4" x 6 1/4".
