Magnificent Antique English Walnut & Brass Ship's Strong Box C.1860 - Secret Drawers

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A really fabulous early Victorian Captain's / Ship's strong box made from solid Walnut, it's a huge, hefty piece which will certainly make a statement, and a very useful piece today.

Dating to around 1850, this solid piece is smothered in heavy cast brass which has been professionally re-polished to gleam. There are highly decorative handles each side.

The box comes with it's two very grand original keys, one to open the trunk and one for the two interior compartments. The large key opens the box and the lid can be lifted with the brass knob at the front. The polished brass escutcheons and hinges on the interior are beautifully engraved.

While the lock is unlocked .. the tip of the key keeps the central tray in place and locked in ... the secret to remove the tray is to lock the box while the lid is open, allowing you to remove the key and releasing the central tray. Once the tray is removed, two secret drawers, one each side can be accessed.

On both the right and left edge of the box (adjacent to the escutcheons) are holes .. this would have been for large bolts to be placed right down the sides and bolted to the Captain's cabin deck.

A fabulous piece in excellent condition, measuring 20 1/2" x 13 3/4" x 10 1/2" tall while closed ... nothing to worry about as worldwide shipping of this mammoth piece is included!

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
