A stunning Victorian English travelling compendium, probably a wedding gift to a couple with contents for both a lady or gentleman. The top of the box and most of the pieces with their original monogram.
The box is top-notch made from exotic Coromandel with polished brass edging . What makes this one very, very special is it's mechanical cantilever trays which swing to the sides once the lid is opened and the front comes down, beautifully crafted with rounded edges, this box would have been for a very wealthy family when made.
The box comes complete with a working Bramah lock and key requiring a push and turn, the creme de la creme of locks as you would expect.
The interior of the fall front is fitted with various accessories including tiny hand mirrors and straight razors (a chip to one razor). The top tray houses handled boot jacks and a plethora of accessories for all sorts of jobs. including Mother of Pearl handled accessories with silver pique inlay.
This tray can be removed to reveal a pair of clothes brushes and a glove stretcher below; there are two "secret" drawers to the back fronted in leather and lined in pristine velvet and silk.
The jars and boxes are all made from exquisite heavy cut crystal with sterling silver tops, beautifully decorated with a full hallmark for London 1880 together with the highly coveted Queen Victoria's head duty mark together with the makers mark, GB,GWB,JB for George Betjemanns. The two Cologne bottles were later replaced by the original owners during the Edwardian era, hallmarked for 1907 .. engraved with a matching monogram by the owner.
The interior of the lid is lined in ruched blue velvet; there is a push button behind the lock releasing this panel to reveal the standing mirror in beautiful condition. Behind this, is a secret compartment for letters and papers ... the front of the leather labelled with the top-notch retailer's label "Fisher - 188 Strand, London"
A magnificent heirloom box in superb condition measuring 13 1/2" x 10" x 8" tall while closed. A very heavy box .. but shipping is included.
