Rare Antique English Carved Mahogany Letters Box C.1840 - Armorial Crest

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

I have never come across a box quite like this, earlier than most "Letters" boxes which usually date to the late nineteenth century, this one however dates much earlier to around 1840, very early Victorian.

I really love this piece, beautifully and skillfully carved and clearly a private commission with the family Armorial crest carved to the front with the initials below, I think J E A .. but not quite certain.

The box clearly comes from an aristocratic home, where family members would deposit any letters for post or hand delivery for collection by the household staff. A glass window either side allows a staff member to see if there was mail to be collected. The letters would be collected using the door at the back, complete with working key. The stunning shaped top is carved "For Letters".

Exceptional and in superb condition with the footprint measuring 11" x 7 1/4" x 9 1/2" tall.
