Rare English Regency Jewelry Box - Penwork & Hand Painted - Playing Cards & Lucky Chimney Sweeps C.1820

Description

A really fabulous box, one I have never seen and doubt I will ever again, quite probably a custom box in it's day, around 1820.

The elegant Regency shape is decorated around the sides with intricate and exquisite penwork and the with a central panel of two (lucky) child chimney sweeps playing cribbage. The edges are covered in hand painted playing cards.

The tradition of Chimney Sweeps being the bearer of good luck started just over 200 years ago after a London Chimney Sweeper saved the life of King George III. The sweep had been the only person with enough courage to stop the King's out of control horses and carriage and save the kings life.

The interior has been professionally refitted into a very useful and usable Jewellery box (alas, no key).

The gilded fittings to the exterior remain intact with grand Lion's paw feet and a ring handle to each side.

Stunning in every way in excellent condition dating to around 1820.
