Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1860s.

The key opens the heavy reticulated brass clasp to the top. The interior is finished in a deep blue leather lining and the base is sprung .. this would allow the books to be pressed down, the clasp shut and locked creating a tight fitting. The interior of the clasp is signed by the top notch London manufacturer & retailer "Howell James & Co, Regent St. London".

Excellent condition with exterior measurements: 7 3/8" x 2 3/4" x 4 3/4" tall, the interior measuring 6 1/4" x 1 3/4" and around 3 1/4" deep.
