Magnificent Large Mahogany & Brass Letters Box - V R - Victoria Regina C.1880

Description

A wonderfully impressive letter box used in hotels, private clubs and the grandest of private residences, these letter boxes would have collected the mail and a member of staff would then have taken it to the post office.

This one dates to the Victorian era, around 1880. The thick brass plate to the top has been professionally re-polished to gleam. Above the letter slot is a large engraved crown with enameled V one side, the red enameled R the other, for Victoria Regina. Below the slot is the words "Letter Box".

The front of the doors are panelled and a polished brass escutcheon houses a working (replacement) key.

A grand and impressive size standing 17" tall x 11 1/2" square.
