Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian secretaire bookcase typically combines an upper glazed display cabinet with a lower writing bureau and cupboard space. Produced between 1901 and 1910, these pieces often feature lighter woods like golden oak, simplified classical moulding, and decorative carved panelling.

Edwardian cabinetmakers predominantly utilized solid oak, oak veneers, clear float glass for doors, and cast brass handles or escutcheons. Drawers were commonly constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints and lined with pine or mahogany secondary woods.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, period-correct brass hardware, original glass panes with slight waviness, and traditional drop-down desk mechanisms. Look for evidence of natural age to the timber surface and consistent construction techniques throughout.

Place the piece against a neutral or rich wall backdrop to highlight the warm grain of the golden oak. Use the upper glazed shelves to curate a mix of hardback books and ceramic objects, while utilizing the lower secretaire section as a concealed workspace.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain to preserve the finish and prevent the oak from drying out.
