Stunning Edwards & Roberts Victorian Mahogany Desk

Description

A mahogany Late Victorian writing desk by Edwards and Roberts. Having a solid mahogany rectangular top with a black leather inset writing surface. The central rectangular frieze drawer houses the intricate locking mechanism, when the key is turned it activates a spring mechanism which releases the two canted pilasters which lock the pedestal drawers "wellington " chest style. Each drawer retaining their original cast brass handles and having satinwood string inlay. The whole supported on eight chamfered cabriole supports terminating in brass and porcelain castor's, stamped Edwards and Roberts to the central drawer circa 1890

The firm Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp.
