Description

A stunning quality mahogany inlaid Late Victorian desk by Edwards and Roberts of London. Having a brass galleried back with two sets of bow front drawers united by a central shelf with satinwood cross banded detail and inlaid griffins to the drawer fronts. The solid mahogany top having an olive green leather inset with blind and gilt tooled detail above a central frieze drawer of inverted breakfront outline, flanked by two sets of bow front drawers with beautiful floral marquetry inlay depicting harebells and griffins and with turned brass knobs. the whole supported on eight square tapering legs with brass socket castor's. Polished to the sides and reverse so the desk can be free standing circa 1890

Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century.

They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp.
