Rare Mahogany Wheel Barometer by Woller

A very rare and possibly unique mahogany wheel barometer by this inventive maker.

The rare 9" diameter silvered brass scale calibrated from 28" to 31" and engraved with weather indications and profusely engraved to the centre with scrolls and the makers name and place of work of Matthew Woller, Fecit, 51 Edgbaston Street, Birmingham. The finely cut blued steel indicator hand showing the rise and fall in pressure. The substantial concave brass bezel fitted with a matching brass set hand controlled using the small brass knob to the centre of the flat glass. The silvered brass thermometer scale calibrated from 30º to 100º Fahrenheit and with alcohol thermometer, all set within a fixed wooden case. Also with Hygrometer and Level, both surrounded with a glazed brass bezel. The mahogany case with thick boxwood edge stringing, oval shell inlay to the centre and crossbanded sides. The impressive broken architectural top with early short shoulders, thick boxwood and ebony inlay and a central brass finial.

Note: Matthew Woller arrived in the UK from Germany in the late 18th century with his young son Charles. He was an Instrument Maker and a Clockmaker. He appears to have specialised in the unusual and either made the cases himself or had a local Cabinet Maker carry out the work for him. Charles went on to become a partner in the business and subsequently had a son, also called Matthew. The Grandson of the first Matthew continued the business into the late 19th century and eventually moved to No 63 Edgbaston Street, Birmingham.
