Antique Silver Plated Tea Caddy - Lion Handles - Gilded Sphinx Finial C.1860

Description

A magnificent antique English Egyptian revival tea caddy, so very fashionable in England during the Victorian era, hence the mythical beast / sphinx finial beautifully gilded.

The oval formed caddy has two very English ring handles with grand Lion back plates joined by exquisite engraved floral and foliate garlands. Both the back and front has a circular cartouche with a decorative intertwined initials engraved, I think a letter M and P.

Miraculously, the caddy retains it's original tiny key in working condition. The interior reveals a double compartment configuration, one section for Black Tea, the other for Green Tea.

A superb, unusual and most decorative gem, measuring 6 1/2" handle to handle x 5 1/4" tall to top of finial.
