Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The lid of the box is inlaid with a central Nacre shell Artist's pallet with brushes and each corner inlaid with the flowers of the British Isles; The Rose for England, The Shamrock for Ireland, The Daffodil for Wales and the Thistle for Scotland ... about as charming and collectible as they get; the majority of these are made from plain Mahogany.

The interior of the lid is inset with a embossed leather panel signed "J. Newman's / Manufacturer's".
The box is beautifully fitted with a removable pen tray flanked with two cut glass inkwells; a white marble or alabaster palette, a palette tower (some damage), the metal tin opening both top and bottom containing chalks and the delightful collection of paints marked Newman's, Soho Sqaure and others (Winsor & Newton). There is a pull out drawer below with a (later) ceramic palette signed Winsor & Newton.
