Antique English Oak & Brass Letters Box C.1890

Description

A very unusual example, I haven't had (or seen) this design before. The solid Oak is beautifully polished and looks quite wonderful next to the pierced or reticulated panels to the top and front with a slot to the hinged lid.

These wonderful pieces would have been in a smart hotel, private club or aristocratic residence and mail placed in the box for taking either to the post office or hand delivered; very civilized! The staff would be able to see though the pierced panels if mail needed removing. The box is fitted with a lock and comes with a tasseled working key.

Beautiful condition, with the base measuring 6 5/8" x 5 1/4" and standing 7 5/8" tall at the back. made to either stand desk-top or be hung on the wall.
