19th Century Carved Walnut Desk Lion Mask

Description

This is Captain William Fordyce Blair (1805-1884) Carved Masked Walnut Desk. He was a successful naval Captain and, in addition to being very well travelled (Port Blair in the Andeman Islands is reputedly named after him), he achieved considerable financial success by capturing a well endowed pirate ship. He served in the Burmese War and was attached to the French Army with 500 seamen at the taking of Morea Castle and Algiers in 1830. He was a great collector of antiquities and used the walled garden to house a museum. The desk came from Blair Castle in Ayrshire, reputed to be the oldest continually inhabited Castle in Scotland (the original Norman Tower is thought to date back to 1105)

This is a gorgeous freestanding twin pedestal desk which has just been restored to a stunning condition and is ready to be used. It is of baroque style with carved masked handles, foliate scrolls and cartouches. It has a raised superstructure with three short drawers above a slant front. It measures 55" wide by 44.5" high by 32" deep.

The buyer will be delighted.
