Rare Antique Boulle Letter Scale by Sampson Mordan & Co., London C.1890

Description

A rarely found pair of desk-top postage scales standing on the most magnificent shaped Boulle base; The tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain.

The brass is engraved with a plethora of decoration and the balance signed by the very famous Sampson Mordan & Co. of London. Both pans are also decorated, the letter pan having a central ornate monogram.

Excellent condition, the base measuring 9 1/4" x 5 3/4" and standing 5 1/2" tall.
