These often crack and break, in this case all the joints are perfect and the irons are the original ones for this bed, not dropped in from a pile of surplus irons as is often the case. The original casters are present and working.
I made a mattress base for this bed some years ago which is both comfortable and efficient. Original spring bases or steel slats are notorious for sagging and being dreadfully uncomfortable. (bear this in mind where ever you buy your bed!). My base boards and braces come with a set of brass screws and take about ten minutes to set up.
The bed is 78.5 inches in length, 48 inches wide and 42.5 inches high at the head end and 39.5 inche shigh at the foot. From the floor to the top of the runner is 17.5 inches. (not too high which is an advantage),
The bed will take a standard size mattress, another point worth bearing in mind when buying a victorian bed.
