Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1860s.
The lock appears not to be working but we have paired it with a display key to complete the look, which sits in the square inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon. The front of the frame on the lid is decorated with two glass floral mounts.

The interior has been re-lined in an appropriate hand-marbled paper and a velvet base, a good clean finish ready for use. The underside appears to have once had four square bracket feet applied, but have been removed sometime in the past.

A fabulous, showy and very usable box in excellent condition, with a footprint measuring 15" x 12 3/4" x 4 3/4" tall. The interior space to the base of the box measures 10 3/4" x 8 1/2" x 2 1/4" deep.
