Beautiful Late 19th Century Mahogany Chiming Bracket Clock

19th century
Description

This is a beautiful and elegant Late 19th Century Mahogany Chiming Bracket Clock in full working order.

Having inverted bell-top surmounted by a carrying handle and pineapple finials, with brass frets and drop handles to the sides, the front flanked by fluted corinthian colums, the base on cast gilt feet, the brass dial with raised silvered chapter-ring, Roman numerals, Arabic five-minute divisions, gilt spandrels, subsidiary rings for pendulum regulation, chime/silent and Westminster Chime/chime on eight bells, the massive eight-day three-train fusee movement with engraved backplate chiming the quarters on eight bells and the hours on a ninth bell or a gong, the pendulum with rise and fall, fine regulation and lock.

Measurement - 22.3 inches high.

Basically, this clock came from Sudeley Castle Estate, but was purchased at the contents auction of Hawling Manor in 1988. At the viewing day early in October 1988, an old family retainer, said that the clock had been purchased by the tenant farmers of the large Sudeley estate and presented to Mr Dent-Brocklehurst in the years leading up to WW1 – he thought about 1912. It was bought by them in Cheltenham, in the Montpellier area, from a specialist clock shop, but it may not have been new. The catalogue mentioned a missing locking stud – it was not missing at all, simply loose in the bottom of the case The family made their Victorian fortune from making gloves – ‘Dents of Worcester’, and spent it on what was the Sudeley ruin, in restoration and refurnishing it.

This clock is in full working order.
