Killarney Ware is the name given to small items of furniture, boxes and other fancy wooden goods made in Killarney, Ireland using this local wood known as Arbutus (from the Strawberry Tree) peculiar to this part of Kerry during the nineteenth century and later; this games box dates to around 1850, so around 160 years old now.

The outside is unusually decorated with inlaid marquetry Oak leaves and Acorns; what also makes this example special are the large Ferns inlaid into the inside, the interior often left plain and un-decorated.

A highly collectible box complete with the 30 turned backgammon counters / Draughts or Checkers.
A good size, measuring 21" x 10" x 3" while closed.
