Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1860s.
Whilst the heyday of the industry was the nineteenth century Tunbridge Ware took its origins from a much earlier time. Wood turners of the district had been famed since the seventeenth century and as Tunbridge Wells developed as a fashionable spa in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, visitors expected to purchase souvenirs produced by local craftsmen.

The box features a central picture of Muckross Abbey in Killarney, Ireland and would have been produced to sell as souvenir in the local area.
The interior of the box has been re-lined with a hand-marbled paper and the interior of the lid, retaining the original silk lining. The front has a wonderful chunky Tunbridge button escutcheon, housing a working key.
Excellent condition, measuring 9" x 6" x 2 3/4".
