Description

A quite magnificent biscuit box, a rare and interesting example with a plethora of Egyptian decoration with engraved Chariot racing scenes to both front and back, standing on three Sphinx feet.

One of the most intriguing things about this piece are the wonderful integral handles with the outer frame or the Sphinx heads lifting, quite charming; the hinged lid is also topped with a Sphinx finial.

The underside marked HB for the Victorian silversmith, HB for Henry Bourne of Birmingham; this piece dating to around 1890. Excellent condition, with a base diameter measuring 6 1/2" (excluding feet) and standing 8" tall.
