Magnificent Antique Brass Bound Chinese Hand Caved Walnut Box C.1880

Description

Simply the best carved Chinese box I have come across, the work has to be seen to be believed, quite magnificent, each panel being carved from a single piece of Walnut Timber.

The top three-dimensional Chinoiserie panel is quite wonderful, every time you look something new is discovered, each corner decorated with a carved butterfly.

One side panel features a huge crab, if you look to the right you will see a spider chasing a fly; the other side features a huge Crayfish & Frog; the back panel features a Chinese Dragon scene and the front panel, a pair of Cockerels or Roosters with a small Frog in between. All the carvings are in superb condition.

The interior has been relined in a hand-marbled paper, creating a clean, fresh finish ready to use; complete with working key. An heirloom quality gem in excellent condition, measuring 13" x 10" x 6".
