P A Oxley Antique Clocks & Barometers has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The beautifully made wood rod pendulum with a substantial brass bob and large rating nut. The round silvered brass dial showing seconds, with matching blued steel hands and engraved with Gray, Edinburgh, Clockmaker to the King. The well proportioned and small mahogany case with high quality flame veneer throughout the trunk door and base. The base also with a single plain plinth. The hood with a typical Edinburgh architectural top, glazed access door and a gilt wooden sight ring.
Note: James was a second generation Clockmaker and took over his Fathers position of Clockmaker to King George III in Scotland in 1806. He is known to have worked in Parliament Square, High Street & South Bridge. Apprenticed to his Father, he served some years in London under the eye of eminent makers. In the 1841 Census he is listed as a Watchmaker, married, aged 55 and has 5 children.
